TESTIMONIALS FROM PREVIOUSLY AFFLICTED SOULS...
"From the very beginning - the irresistible invocation to “Roll Up, Roll Up” I feel as if i am about to be entertained, amused, and maybe fleeced too - if not physically harmed!
With typical Clatch invention, both musical and lyrical, the show unfolds before our very ears. There are scary moments, inspiring and poignant moments, and, finally, we feel as if we have cheated death and have been cured - though cured of what, with what, by whom, we may never know!
By the end of my visit, I felt dizzy, disgustipated, a little hysterical and very relieved - of my ills - and my cash" - Gary Grainger, DJ on the Award Winning Blues Show on Bishop FM
"The album is full of wonderful slide guitar work and some excellent banjo too. The songs are skilfully arranged with excellent lyrics. There are some flashes of humour (unlike Clatch’s other epic Crow Soul) but it still ‘got me’ just like that one did. I planned to listen to a track or two and then come back to it, but ended up sitting for an hour entranced by the music and the imagery.
There is a wonderful movement through guitar styles and picking techniques with wonderful light and shade, including a piece with an unusual time signature (which may be 6/8). I guarantee you will be hooked from the very first slide note which is stunning in its purity. The whole is enhanced by some wonderful drum, woodblock and stomping rhythms and even what to me sounds like a pump organ: A seriously creepy sound . This album is just wonderful. Don’t miss it" - Ian McKenzie, Blues In The South, June Edition
Muses of Murderous Mayhem, Masked with Magical Musicality...!
"Gothic Americana is one of the many tags associated with the work of Half Deaf Clatch, and his latest offering - Dr Bloodwort's Nefarious Medicine Show - is a fine example of this dark genre. Combining his passion for old time music and all things macabre, Clatch rolls up with the story of Dr Bloodwort, an evil and depraved shyster, who takes his medicine show from town to town, using alliterative wordplay to dispense snake oil and dark times.
Within the first bars of the opening track, Clatch sets the scene perfectly. Simple acoustic finger-picking giving way to a rollicking bass drum beat, coupled with ear-catching lyrics, that transports the listener back in time to stand on an old dirt road, watching as a battered wagon jolts and sways into town. The rest of the album continues in the same vein. Charley Patton meets Stephen King, as layer upon layer of blues, ragtime and balladry combines with macabre lyrical imagery, and Clatch's trademark growl, to hold the listener spellbound as a Gothic horror story pours forth from the tenth circle of a dark and fertile imagination.
This album is an epic undertaking. Putting the superlative music, performance and production to one side, Clatch also designed the album artwork and created a promotional video that serves as a fine showcase for the talent, imagination and musical virtuosity of a very original artist.
Half Deaf Clatch has long had a reputation for bucking trends and ploughing his own furrow. Long may it continue". - Richard Wall, Author of the Bestselling Novel 'Fat Man Blues', WEBSITE
